The Energy Industry

Qatar currently produces approximately 800,000 bpd of oil and 4.5 bscfpd of gas per day.

The country’s down stream oil and gas processing, petrochemical and fertilizer industries are concentrated in Dukhan, Ras Laffan and Mesaieed. The offshore operations are located primarily in the Northern and Eastern territorial waters, which are being extended to the Western waters.

Oil was first discovered in Dukhan in 1940. In 1946, Mesaieed was developed as an export terminal and now hosts a refinery, four LNG plants, the world’s largest ammonia/urea complex, two world-class polyethylene plants, a large methanol/MTBE complex, an ethylene dichloride/VCM plant and a large steel works.

Ras Laffan is the heart of Qatar’s gas related industry, with a new deep-water port catering for large LNG and product carriers, and further expansion under way as Qatari LNG heads for Europe, the US and the Far East and India.

Ras Laffan is also involved in the development of the gas industry, with projects under construction for the export of Qatari gas to the lower and upper Gulf countries.

Ras Laffan’s gas to liquid (GTL) plants are also being developed. The first of these – Oryx GTL, created in collaboration with Sasol – is on stream, while two other plants in collaboration with ExxonMobil and Shell have been signed up. Other installations include a Helium plant and a large gas-based integrated water and power plant.
